Revenge of Calculon at Rough Trade
There aren't many bands that can put a smile on my face like Nottingham's own Daft Funk. Revenge of Calculon hit Rough Trade Nottingham on Friday to launch their latest album, Welcome to Funktronika!
Masked up and tracksuited like the bastard sons of the Jimmys from 28 Years Later, these filthy buggers can make even the most uptight audience member move and shake to the dirtiest of beats. With special guest The Red Demon adding sweet vocals and sax appeal, the band cooked to the point that the crowd joined in, and some were even invited on stage to dance along (masked luchadors only, mind).
The best dancer down the front, throwing shapes even I'd never seen, was crowned the latest Funkateer, and the tiny mirror ball on the mixing desk was ceremonially spun.
"Masked, filthy and impossible not to dance to: Revenge of Calculon are the best party in Nottingham."
— Marq Sutton, NottsRocks
Think Money Mark and Kid Carpet with a dash of Mr Scruff's humour thrown in, yet always unmistakably themselves. One thing I love about them, apart from the fact that they always get the party started, is that they've had an artistic vision from the start and stuck to it. They've never compromised, and because of that they've built up a great body of work and a loyal fanbase. Masked, filthy and impossible not to dance to, Revenge of Calculon are the best party in Nottingham.
If you've yet to join the Calculon club, there's still time. So don your mask, shake your tush, see the hot dog man, and I'll smell you down the front, you crazy funktards.
Welcome to Funktronika and all Revenge of Calculon noise candy can be found amongst the digital garbage heap of most popular streaming platforms, but if you want something more sexy their catalogue of seven 7" vinyl singles can be purchased from their webstore and some mighty fine record stores out in the real world.
