To Crease or Not To Crease: The Great Denim Debate

For many, the act of ironing a crease in your jeans is as controversial as a plot twist in a soap opera. It’s so controversial we couldn’t find anyone that does it, but we went ahead and wrote this anyway, you all love lots of content. I bet though there are people out there that bring an iron to their Levi’s.

So….

There are the Purists, who consider jeans a workwear staple that should bear the crumpled signs of daily life with pride (maybe like your granddaddy).

Then, there are those who view the iron as a societal constraint, a metaphor for the subjugation of the masses through enforced conformity (like the majority of the universe, that includes the aliens).

To them, reaching for the iron is akin to surrendering to The Man, like a rebellious rock anthem being turned into an elevator muzak.

And let’s not forget the Reluctant Ironers, individuals who see ironing as less of a chore and more of a Sisyphean task. Each glide of the iron across the fabric is like pushing a boulder uphill, only for it to roll back down in an endless cycle of laundry.

For these folks, ironing jeans is as absurd as giving a cat a bath or trying to solve a Rubik's Cube with your feet. It's a battle against nature, a futile stand against the inherent entropy of the universe.

In the grand theatre of domestic chores, ironing stands out as the Shakespearean tragedy. It’s the task that elicits a deep, existential sigh, a resignation to the fates. Every time an iron is lifted, somewhere a fairy loses its wings, and a wrinkle-free spirit is dampened.

On the other hand, the Refiners believe that a crisply ironed crease lends an air of chic sophistication to the humble denim. Where do you stand in this blue jean middle class generational led battle? Do you even give a fuck?

Let’s look at the pros and cons of ironing a crease in your jeans.

The Pros of the Crisp Crease

1. Elevating Casual to Classy: A crisp crease down the middle of your jeans effortlessly transforms them from casual to dressy. Pair them with a snazzy blazer and you've got yourself a versatile outfit that can transition from a casual day at the office to after-work drinks, even bang on a bow-tie.

2. Insta-Slimming Effect: A well-placed crease creates a visual line that lengthens the leg, giving an illusion of added height and a slimmer silhouette. So, while you're waiting for that gym membership to pay off, your iron can be your best ally.

3. Meticulous Impression: The crease is a small detail that says a lot about you. It shows you're an individual who pays attention to detail, who likes order and precision, and who probably knows where their tax documents are at all times.

The Cons of the Creased Denim

1. Time Investment: Ironing that perfect crease down your jeans can be time-consuming. Even for the most seasoned iron-wielder, aligning the seams and making sure the crease is razor-sharp requires precision and patience.

2. Too Formal?: Jeans were invented as rugged workwear for gold miners. Some feel that a sharp crease robs them of their rebellious, casual spirit. If you show up to a rock concert with creased jeans, you may stick out like a penguin in a flock of pigeons.

3. Crease Maintenance: One does not simply iron a crease once. That crease will require maintenance, especially after washing. And if you sit for long periods, you'll face the wrath of the 'seat-crease', which can make your previously razor-sharp line look more like a crumpled roadmap.

The Great Denim Debate, like any fashion-related controversy, eventually boils down to personal preference. Creasing your jeans could either be a savvy style statement or an unnecessary complication, depending on your lifestyle, aesthetic, and how much you cherish your mornings before work.

Whether you're a crease enthusiast or a purist, remember the golden rule of fashion: wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable.

If a crisp, lengthening crease makes you feel like you're strutting down your personal runway, go for it.

If you prefer your denim rugged and natural, unpressed and ready for anything, that's just as valid. After all, the crease in your jeans (or lack thereof) might just be your personal denim signature.

So, whether you're a Purist, a Reluctant Ironer, or a rebel standing against the tyranny of creases, remember: in the grand scheme of things, ironing your jeans (or not) is one of life's great debates.

It’s a choice, a lifestyle, a statement. In the end, whether you face the ironing board with a sense of duty or a sense of dread, know that you are not alone in your struggle.

After all, isn't life too short to worry about the perfect crease? (We hope we haven’t now started a viral debate on this hot topic, or even maybe a thing, imagine that, we’ve just reinvented the next fashion movement - although Levi’s may write us a letter, not a nice one anyway, but who cares).
